The National Disability Insurance Scheme, in plain English.

The NDIS is an Australia-wide scheme that supports people with permanent and significant disability. Here’s how it works, who it’s for, and how to get started.

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports people with permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday activities. It gives participants enhanced choice and control over how their support is delivered, with lifetime certainty that they will receive the assistance they need.

How it works

Eligible participants receive annual funding to purchase reasonable and necessary supports that help them pursue their goals, achieve greater independence, and engage in community life. Funding can cover education, equipment, health and wellbeing, employment, and social participation.

NDIS vs NDIA

The NDIS is the program itself. The NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency) is the independent agency responsible for operating it.

Why plans differ

Each participant’s circumstances are unique. Each plan is built around the individual’s support needs, goals, daily activities and any other mainstream supports they receive. There’s no “standard” plan.

Mental health (psychosocial disability)

People living with a psychosocial disability — where a mental health condition is permanent and severe enough to affect their ability to engage with their community — may qualify. The NDIS estimates up to 15% of participants have psychosocial disabilities.
